Submission For any enquiries please contact the IAU100 Secretariat at rivero@strw.leidenuniv.nl. Jorge Rivero González, IAU100 Coordinator, Spain/the Netherlands https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeesfQLcX__uLww6yI5Uox2BQK0jfen5PnGIvPIbyYMSueRdw/viewform ------------ 1. Project Title * >> Rock'n'Astronomy under the dish (ENG) / Rock y Astronomía bajo la antena (ESP) 2. Project Summary * Please summarize your proposed project concisely in about 200 words, e.g. The proposed project aims to [achieve what/key potential impact] for [main target beneficiaries] by [doing what and how], etc. >> We will broadcast a live, night, rock concert through streaming and, very likely, Radio 3, the Spanish public radio station that programmes all music styles except classical music. Artists will be professional rock musicians that play in famous Spanish indie rock bands (Lagartija Nick, Lori Meyers, Los Planetas); they will play only themes connected to Astronomy and Space Sciences, mostly already composed by them (including a new theme dedicated to IAU100), but there will be also covers. There will be presenters that explain the project (in Spanish) before and during the musical performance, in coordination with the musicians, projected images and videos and, if necessary, with Radio 3. 3. Location where the project will be implemented * List country/countries and city/cities where the project will be >> European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC), Villanueva de la Cañada, Madrid, Spain. The stage will be installed in a cinematic environment near and below one of the ESTRACK satellite tracking antennas. We will project images and videos on the antenna. In case of poor weather conditions, we will move indoor to an auditorium just 100 m away. The concert will be broadcasted throughout Spain, but can be seen/listened worldwide via the internet (live or podcast). 4. Project Coordinator * Provide contact information of the person responsible of the project, including: Full name, nationality, affiliation, job position >> José Antonio Caballero / Spanish / Centro de Astrobiología (CSIC, INTA) / Científico titular (permanent staff researcher), astrophysicist 5. Email Project Coordinator * This email will be used to contact Project Coordinator >> caballero@cab.inta-csic.es 6. List other Project Members including affiliation * >> Emmet Fletcher (ESAC, ESA, Communication Officer) Michael Küppers (ESAC, ESA) Antonio Arias (Lagartija Nick, Los Evangelistas) "A communicator TBD" (Centro de Astrobiología) Marc Costa (ESAC, ESA, Music Club) 7. Summary of Past Experiences with Demonstrated Outcomes * 200 words max >> Caballero has coordinated already 11 "astro-concerts", including live streaming or broadcasting via Radio 3, in museums, observatories and auditoriums. He has helped several musicians to compose themes and to release full albums related to astronomy topics (with lyrics on light pollution, coronal mass ejection, habitability, instruments and space missions). He is also an award-winner presenter of Radio Clásica. The musical coordinator, Arias, is a recognised vocalist, bassist and composer in Spain. The ESAC Communication and Education Office is one of the most important and active ESA outreach nodes. 8. Program Description, including objectives, specific plans for project development and execution. * 200 words max >> The concert should start at 22:00, at the end of the evening of a working day. Streaming broadcasting will be live and take advantage of the huge internet bandwidth at ESAC; the maximum number of simultaneous connections is TBD. The Radio 3 programme should be broadcasted live (preferably) or edited and broadcasted afterwards. Maximum visibility in social media will be given before, during and after the event; ESAC and CAB will provide their communication machinery: twitter (hashtag TBD), facebook, instagram. About two weeks later, a "legacy" videoclip of a few minutes in length should be uploaded in a YouTube channel, which will be free to use and adapt. 9. Target Group(s) * Please list the primary target sector(s) or group(s) first >> Typical audience of Radio 3 is 600,000 people with ample interest in different musical styles and culture in general. While Radio 3 is broadcasted only in Spain, it can be listened worldwide via web and podcast. Streaming public will likely overlap with the Radio 3 public, with perhaps a slight offset towards rock fans of all ages and genders (with or without interest in Astronomy). Because of logistic issues, public at ESAC will be limited to centre workers and very few guests, perhaps some VIPs (or VVIPs) related to science and culture (up to a dozen). 10. Relation with IAU100 Goals * 200 words max >> The connection of a popular music event with an astronomical site will increase the visibility of Astronomy in Spain. It will attract attention of more listeners in the general public than a pure astronomy event could ever do. Actually, this could be one of the most visible events of communication of Astronomy for the public in Spain ever, in terms of number of viewers/listeners and quality of involved musicians. We expect to stimulate the interest in Astronomy of the general public (including students, families and policy-makers -VVIPs?-). The name of the collaboration between Caballero and Arias has been, for almost a decade, "unitedsoundsofcosmos"; it shares the same origin as the IAU100 central theme, "Uniting our World to Explore the Universe": we use space music to unite the worlds of Science and Culture. 11. Select one or more IAU100 Flagship Programmes relevant to the project * >> Astronomy for Society 12. Explain relation with IAU100 Flagship Programmes * 200 words max >> To our understanding, Astronomy for Society is the only flagship programme that fits our event. Astronomy is one of the few scientific fields that appeals directly to society; Music plays an important role in our daily lives and is woven into the fabric of society. When presented together, Music and Astronomy becomes one of the most inspiring marriages that one can imagine. In any case, our event may attract people who would otherwise not attend an Astronomy event. 13. Project Timeline * 200 words max >> Early October 2018: fix schedule, set agreement with Radio 3. Late October 2018: look for extra funding, set agreement with musicians. November-December 2018: composition of at least one musical theme dedicated to IAU100. January-March 2019: set play list, preparation of presenter(s) script, preparation of videos, music rehearsals, logistic arrangements (stage, audio system, projector(s)). April 2019: media communication, final music rehearsals. May 2019: astro-concert. 14. Project Deliverables * 200 words max >> Radio programme (live or edited in Radio 3 FM and web). Podcast (audio in Radio 3 web). Live streaming (video+audio in ESA web). Legacy videoclip (video in YouTube, TBC). At least one new musical theme dedicated to IAU100. 15. Please explain how audience Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility have been considered in your proposal. * 200 words max >> Anybody can see and/or listen our event from home with a standard radio receiver or a variety of devices that are available at virtually all homes in Spain (smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops), regardless of age, gender or income. 16. Project Budget * Specify details, list item costs in Euros >> * Core musicians' caché (inc. transport, accommodation, amplifiers): 3000 EUR * Local logistics (inc. stage renting, audio system, projectors, streaming service, technical contractor's extra time): >> 1000 EUR * Radio 3 unit (inc. transport, broadcasting system, technicians, presenter): > 3000 EUR * Guest musicians' caché (e.g. Amaral, Soleá Morente): 500-1000 EUR each (optional) 17. List any other additional sources of funding for the project * 200 words max >> * ESAC Faculty: 500 EUR (complement core musicians's caché) * ESAC Site: >> 1000 EUR, in-kind contribution (local logistics) * Radio 3: > 3000 EUR, in-kind contribution * Extra funding sources (under consideration: ESAC space service private companies -Vitrociset, Vega, Serco, RHEA, Praesepe, Isdefe, INSA, HE, GMV, Deimos, Aurora-], town halls of surrounding municipalities): > 1000 EUR (guest musicians' caché) 18. Budget requested * Specify the amount in Euros. >> 2500 EUR (for covering most of the core musicians' caché) 19. How will the project impact be measured and evaluated? * 200 words max >> Number of Radio 3 podcast downloads, number of retweets/shares, number of streaming views, number of YouTube "legacy video" views. 20. Please use the above metrics to define “project success”. * 200 words max >> Together with the hundred thousand simultaneous Radio 3 listeners, a few thousands of each of the metrics above one month after the event would be a "project success". 21. Please indicate actions planned to ensure the project’s sustainability * 200 words max >> In principle, the project will not be "sustained" in the future. However, after the May 2019 event the organisers and potential sponsors will consider to continue the project and organise one astro-concert per year with different musical styles. 22. Please indicate any other information you think might be relevant * 200 words max >> Core musicians vary with awarded budget and availability on selected dates. With 3000 EUR (2500 EUR IAU100 + 500 EUR ESAC Faculty) an illustrative basic configuration would be: Antonio Arias (Lagartija Nick - vocals, bass), JJ Machuca (Lori Meyers - keyboards), Erik Jiménez (Los Planetas - drums), Juan Codorníu (Lagartija Nick - guitar). Guest musicians vary similarly: e.g. Soleá Morente, Amaral, Florent y J (Los Planetas). Potential Radio 3 presenter: Ángel Carmona (Premio Ondas to best musical radio presenter 2015) or Santiago Bustamante. ------------ https://www.iau.org/public/iau100/ IAU100: Uniting our World to Explore the Universe IAU100 Flagship Programmes The IAU Flagship Programmes are global programmes on specific themes that will help to achieve the IAU100’s main goals. 1- IAU100 Celebrations. 2 - Astronomy for Society: This Flagship programme will focus on highlighting the importance of astronomy for society.
